Well it was bound to happen at some point just we never know when. It has been about two weeks since I last posted and that was because I suffered an injury to my knee exercising. I used a new program on the exercise bike and the resistance was pretty strong. I did dumb it down some but apparently after having it happen a couple of times it must have been too much for my left knee. At first my legs felt like they had had a good workout. I even did weight lifting for a good 40 minutes. The next morning though my knee let me know it was not happy and by that evening I could hardly get into bed and almost couldn't get out of bed in the morning due to the pain.
Since I knew something was really wrong I didn't mess around but drove myself to the hospital ER as my doctor could not see me. I was very fortunate that after having x-rays no tears in any of the tendons or other connecting tissue could be seen. The fullness under the kneecap was most likely all inflammation so they put my left leg in a leg brace. This I had to wear all the time for the first two days and after that I could start slowly bending and straightening the leg a few times a day. I did that for about a week. If I was an inch taller or my car door didn't open that extra inch or the seat moving back enough there would have been no way that I could have gotten my straight leg into the car. Just glad it wasn't my driving leg.
I just wear a small strap under the knee and I am starting to do stairs and hope to be able to get some walking in.
My other two setbacks hit on Monday the 17th of June. In the morning my right eye was dry and stuck to the eyelid. Those that suffer from dry eye likely know what it feels like to practically rip your eye when you try to open them. This time it was really, really, bad. The next day it was no better but felt worse so I called my eye doctor. He was off but his office called him and he called me and told me to come in. He came in and was he glad he did come in to see me as I had ripped about 3/4 of the cornea away. He put in a contact lens that was considered an eye bandage so that the cornea would heal. By the next day only a small section still had to grow back. Yesterday when he checked it it was better and I wasn't having to wear two pares of sun glasses. I now have to take medicine to try to correct my dry eye issue. Not being able to rub my eye at all makes it so I can't wear eye makeup as you have to wipe the makeup off and any slight rubbing of the lid against the eye could rub off the newly healed section of the cornea. I will try to go without for the next week or so but I don't know if I can do it for longer as I am a plain Jane type of girl. Pretty but plain.
Later in the day I tried to do some house cleaning and did something stupid. You know, when you are limited in how much you can lift but you think, "Oh I can do that!. Wrong! I decided to do a thorough vacuum cleaning and decided to lift a heavy hassock which maybe weight 40-50 pounds. I have a number of craft books secreted away in it. Well my independent spirit had me thinking I could do it and I did manage picking it up and putting it on the couch. However, when I was ready to put it back down on the floor I somehow tore an abdominal muscle. So needless to say I am dealing with even more pain. I am glad the knee and eye are much better as this is quite debilitating. I still am working though.
Having the knee injury was bad enough as it meant I would not be able to work out a lot but now the time frame to getting back to the gym is pushed back even farther. I might have to call them and have them put a hold on my membership which I guess you can do if you are sick. I also can't use weights so that stinks even more and I have gained already five pounds because of not being able to be aerobically active.
How to combat the problem: Do exercises in a chair that doesn't involve moving the ab muscles except for holding them in. (even that hurts) - Do arm exercises with no weights and just do several sets - Eat plenty of leafy salads instead of foods high in carbs - Try to walk as much a possible. This too makes the abs hurt and my lower back but if I can somehow keep it to 15 min at at time maybe it will help work at getting off these five pounds.
Lastly I need to stay positive. It can be so easy to just say, "I give up!" but no, as that does not help me one bit in trying to get healthier. Having a negative or woe is me attitude can drive friends and family away. Where as keeping a positive attitude and finding ways to do things despite the setback that is currently being faced, always brings better results.
