Intermittent Fasting Update

If you have read my last entry I had started a fasting routine. I was first starting my fasting at 6 p.m. and ended the fast at 10 a.m. I found that I became very hungry by 9:30 to 10 p.m. After a few days I finally had to change my fasting to start at 7:00 p.m. and end it at 12:00 noon. This seemed to work as I was starting to lose weight about a pound a day. Next I decided to lengthen the fast to 20/4 and I was very pleased that I wasn't hungry. Then a few days later I was at work trying to put together work that I could do from home, and I realized I did a 23/1 for my fasting. More like at 24 hour fast.

The book that has helped me is The Complete Guide to Fasting, by Dr, Jason Fung. There is so much to learn about how insulin and glucose work in the body and what happens while you are fasting.

My weight doctor was amazed that I was now trying to go 24 hours before I have a meal, I also have managed to lose five pounds. Most of that is water but it does make you feel good. I am not tired, I go for walks everyday so that I can burn hopefully some fat after the glucose has been used up. It is only once the glucose is used that the body starts to take the fat in the liver and turn it into food for the body.

Fasting is not something new. Our ancestors also fasted as there were times when food might be scarce and they had to go longer between meals. In the 1950's families ate only at certain times. The only snack I remember getting in the early 1960's was an afternoon snack. We were all thin and it was rare to see someone overweight.

For diabetics, insulin resistance causes them to gain weight. The higher the glucose, the higher the dose of insulin is needed. This gets to the point that fat really starts to accumulate and no matter what a diabetic tries they are not able to successfully lose the excess weight. This certainly makes a person wonder why they even try. They eat low fat and low carbs and very little happens. Fasting has been proven over and over that it works. Never do this unless you are under a doctors care.  He will help reduce the amount of insulin as weight is lost. Eventually a type 2 diabetic can come off of most or all medications. It does take motivation but who wants to die from complications associated with diabetes. Many former type 2 diabetics have reversed this disease through fasting.

Being diagnosed with prediabetes a couple of years ago, I have tried very hard to lose weight. I would lose ten to fifteen pounds but then gain it all back and them some. Many can relate to losing and gaining of weight and the emotional toll it can take on a person.

Since nothing was working and all I was being told to do is eat low fat and low carbs and exercise I still could not keep the weight going down and if I got a little lacks, after a while the weight would soar right up again and then some. I knew I did not want to be a full blown diabetic and I did not like how I looked. I knew there had to be someone out there that could help. Fortunately I found a weight loss center and a doctor who really cares and is trying hard to help me and I think now we maybe have the right plan to reach my goals and improve my health.

I will continue to keep you updated on my progress. Until next time..........
