Well I am still trying to stay at home as much as possible only going out to pick up prescriptions or a few groceries. I do go for walks when it isn't raining and I have usually have something I can drop off at the post office. When I go out I always make sure I have a mask on. If there is no one around I will take it off and hold it in my hand until I need to put it on.
I am still doing some workshops and I must say I have learned many new things and hope I can remember the information. I did take notes so I will have something to refer to if I need it. I also have been trying to change images from a bpm to a jpg and today I finally figured out what I had to do, My programs are a littler newer and there are two menus that will pop up. I was only getting the first menu but realized I need to click and hold a little longer and then the menu I needed was there.
About maybe two weeks ago I did a telemedical visit with my weightloss doctor. I made sure I took all of my vitals prior, as well as, weighed myself. I also decided to measure to see if there were any changes and I was very pleased to see in a few areas where I lost a half inch to one inch. I wrote those down so that my doctor could get an idea what my measurements were before and what they were that morning. My weight has remained at 225 lbs so she decided to recommend intermittent fasting, doing a 16/8. That means I would not eat for sixteen hours and then have an eight hour window for eating. So I was to start fasting at 7:00 pm until 10:00 am for a total of 15 hours.
I wasn't really losing any weight and I was having some trouble not eating after 6:00 pm. I decided to try starting my fasting at 7:00 pm and going until 12:00 noon. That makes it a 17 hour fast and a six hour eating time. My doctor also prescribed Trazodone to take in the evening to help me not to feel anxious about eating and it has helped. It also improves my sleeping which has been a problem. This morning I felt a little lighter and weighed myself and lost one pound. I am planning to keep to this schedule and hopefully by my next appointment I will have lost five or six pounds.
Drinking plenty of water, tea or coffee helps throughout the day. I keep the coffee in the morning though I only drink decaffeinated as well as my tea. I think I have only one tea that is not decaf. My eating I keep to just lunch and if I need a snack I will have one and then a nice dinner around 5:00 or 6:00 pm. Nothing after 7:00 pm only water or tea. At some point I will try just having a protein shake for lunch and see how I do. First I want to get accustomed to going the 17 hour fast and if I am not light headed I will start doing the shake.
I will continue to let you know how the intermittent fasting is going and how I am feeling. Stay well and safe!

Last Day of Quarantine
Well today is the last day of quarantine for our apartment building. What a relief as I am out of many things and I found it difficult in having other people do some of my shopping. I am making a list and hope I only have to go to two stores but one never knows what will be on the shelves.
It sounds as though meat is going to be an issue so if the shelves do not have what I need I will look for canned meat. I have found different things to use canned chicken, canned hams and dried beef. My freezer is quite small so I don't have much room to stock up on freezing meat.
Today I tied in by Zoom for an all day assembly since ours was cancelled. Otherwise I would have been making a trip to Rochester, N.Y. So good that we can still receive spiritual information despite having to stay home. So nice to see faces of many friends.
Yesterday I did use my treadmill and it felt good to get on it. I did not use it today as the assembly was from 9:40-4:00. I did do some standing leg exercises and tomorrow I will try to get on the treadmill and do my weights.
So far I am doing well in staying true to the intermittent fasting and I hope this will help me to lose weight. I will wait a couple of days before weighing myself to see how I am doing.
Take care and stay safe everyone!

Quarantined - Days 8 thru 13
Well I am nearing the end of quarantine which we cannot leave our apartments until 8 a.m. on the 20th of April. There really hasn't been much going on except for working on online workshops which I must say has been nice because I have learned several interesting things. Some I can use at work but others have been in areas that do not quite fit with my job but is good information to know.
I had an issue with my microphone not working but I persisted and managed to fix the problem so I could connect with a live workshop. Next week I will be able to make up the one where I could not connect to see what they were doing. I am glad the instructor is willing to do a one-on-one with me.
Once I had the microphone working my younger sister contacted me and we doubled checked everything and we decided to do a Zoom meeting. We then contacted our other sister and she also joined in. It really was nice to be able to connect and see each other as it looks like it will be some time before any of us can do the 2 1/2 or 4 hour drive to see one another. I mentioned to my son that he will have to do that as well so we can at least see each other.
I haven't been too bored but did have a couple of days during this quarantine where I seemed to nibble all day and into the evening. Fortunately I haven't gained any weight. I spoke with one doctor by phone yesterday and she would like me to use my treadmill at least 30 min. a day. I contacted the office to contact my down stair neighbor to give him a heads up that he would hear some rumbling. My other doctor visit by phone was my weight loss doctor and we are going to try something else to help me sleep and I am to try what is called intermittent fasting. I will have breakfast at 10 a.m. and will not eat anything after 6 p.m. Hopefully I can keep myself busy in the evening where I won't feel hungry.
I decided to measure my body to compare to what I had for numbers back in February and I was pleased that I did lose a few inches which made me very happy and that also helps to want to keep going. So if you are on a weight loss journey and the scale doesn't seem to move make sure when you first start you take measurements and then take them a few weeks or a month later to see that there is progress being made even though it might not seem like it because of what the scale reads.
I hope everyone is staying safe and well at this time.

Quarantine: Day 7 Laundry day
Today is day 7 and it is Saturday. Some days seem to run together so fortunately I can keep track of what day it is on the calendar and internet.
I decided this morning to do some laundry. Yes, it was by hand. The laundry rooms here are locked so that we stay in our apartments. We just have to be patient and do what we can. I manage to wash my private items and shirts in the morning and then in the afternoon I did my leggings. I made sure I picked light weight items so that they would be easier to wash and wring out. I then hung them up in the bathroom to dry. I have a over head heater so that helps to speed up the drying process. I did not do my sheets or towels but will wait until the end of the week when our quarantine is over.
I have been trying to learn different things with my laptop which is good. I have never been computer literate so it takes me a little longer to figure things out but am glad I am home to be able to learn. As I mentioned before, I need to have a clear mind to tackle computer issues.
I used another video for exercise today and it felt good to get some exercise in. It can be stifling being stuck inside all the time so exercise does help change things up.
Our county has jumped up to 61 confirmed cases with still only 7 recovered and no deaths. I don't know if our patients are kept here or sent to Broome County for care. Quite a jump from yesterday at 53 confirmed cases. I guess we will keep our eyes on this.
Stay in and stay safe everyone. Until tomorrow......

Quarantined- days 4, 5, and 6
So this is day six of my quarantine and I really didn't have much to post for days four and five. I have been working from home which affords some distraction from being cooped up inside all the time. I am also trying to get more familiar with my laptop as I normally don't have time to mess around after I get home from work, I find I need a clear head to deal with computers.
I am still doing my best to eat healthy and not nibble as that will derail any progress I have made so far. It gives me a good sense of accomplishment when I am able to resist the temptation specially since the kitchen is only about ten steps away from the living room.
Last night I baked a canned ham with pineapple on top. With that I had 3/4 of a cup of organic rainbow carrots. I must say they were very good and very colorful. I made sure that with being kept inside for at least two weeks my meat that I purchased might not last so canned hams do not need to be refrigerated nor frozen so that freed up space in those two areas. Also the shelf life is better so you don't need to worry that it is going to get freezer burnt or spoil in the fridge. Of course once the can has been opened and you have left overs, those do need to be refrigerated and used up in four days. I buy the small canned hams which gives me about four meals. This is a nice change to having organic ground beef or chicken.
Exercising has been enjoyable as I can exercise whenever I like. I am always going online to try to find some new exercises and lately I was searching the web for chair exercises and I found a site that not only had illustrations, but also has videos showing how to do them, This is the link for that site: californiamobility.com/21-chair-exercises-for-seniors-visual-guide
Exercise is very important today with not only being confined indoors but for everyday overall good health. It is also good to try different forms of exercise so that you do not get bored. I have videos, standing exercises, chair exercises and floor exercises. I also have a treadmill and a cycle to use. This certainly helps change things up so that I do not get bored. Whenever I can find a new move to do I like to add it to my routine,
As an update at present there seems to be 55 confirmed cases, 7 recovered, 0 deaths for our county. The county north of us has 102 confirmed, 71 recovered, 3 deaths. The county south of us has 105 confirmed, 23 recovered, 6 deaths. I do hope people will stay in and be safe. It would be nice if everyone could be tested. It must be heart wrenching for those who have lost family and friends. Use wisdom if you go out. Think not only of your own safety but the safety of others, Till tomorrow......

Quarantined - Day 3
Here we are on day three and I did not do much today. After taking care of my normal morning routine I got busy at working. Today I actually did a 2.5 online workshop and will do another one tomorrow as well.
For lunch I enjoyed a healthy toss salad and a bowl of blue berries. Then I took care of some house keeping chores such as dishes and mopping the kitchen floor. I then went around with my disinfectant wipes and did all of the handles, door knobs and then my remotes, computer, tablet and phone.
Around 1:30 a friend contacted me that one of our friends was going to the store and if any of us needed some groceries she would be happy to pick them up for us. Since my romaine lettuce was about gone and I was already out of tomatoes I contacted the person and gave her my short list. Again I had to tape an envelope on the outside of my apartment door so when management dropped off the bag of groceries they could take her the money I owed. She was very sweet as when I opened my door there was a bouquet of flowers. I then proceeded to disinfect everything before putting it away.
This evening was the celebration of the Memorial of Christ. Since we cannot assemble together we did our service online and it was nice that we did not have to miss out on this special evening. This pandemic certainly has created difficulties in many areas of life but fortunately technology can help us stay in touch even when in quarantine.
Stay safe everyone.

Quarantined - Day 2
Managed to get an early start this morning and worked for a few hours which felt good to be busy. I then made a toss salad minus tomatoes as I am all out. Set my garbage outside my door for the custodian to pick up and placed a plastic bag on my door so that they could leave my medication and mail in something.
My afternoon was not very eventful but handled text messages from co-workers and work e-mail. I did work on some word search puzzles to change things up a bit and then around 4 pm I decided to exercise. I used my small peddle exercise bike and then worked out to one of Jane Fonda's DVD's, Trim, Tone and Flex. The videos that she does for seniors are a little more gentle but you still get a very good work out. I saw online that she has been promoting her older video's from the 1980's.
Working out to videos can help build muscle strength, and can help with weight loss. It also helps to release endorphins which makes me feel good and those who are confined need to feel as though they did something good for that day. Each time I finish my exercising/recess, see April 22, 2019 post keeping the idea fun, I am pleased that I had put forth the effort. Since doing this regularly I am feeling and starting to see the changes. My workouts are not hard but they are paying off.
I did well with my diet today. This morning I had a vegan protein shake, for lunch a nice toss salad, and for supper I made stuffed peppers with quinoa pilaf and blueberries for desert. I also drank lots of water through out the day.
Here is my quinoa pilaf recipe:
Pre-heat oven 350
1 cup Quinoa - rinsed
2 cups water or broth
1/2 c. carrots chopped very fine
1/4 c. celery ( one small stalk) chopped fine
1/4 c. onion - chopped fine
1/2 c, chopped bell pepper
1/2 c. Feta cheese
Put rinsed quinoa in pot and cook off moisture then add water or broth. Bring to a boil and then simmer for 15 minutes or until water is absorbed.
Chop carrots, celery, bell pepper and onions. Place in pan and add 1/4 c. water or broth and saute vegetables until just tender. Add to cooked quinoa and mix in feta cheese. Place in casserole dish and bake for 20 minutes.
This is great for stuffing bell peppers as well. If you make stuffed peppers after adding additional feta cheese on top cut foil to cover the tops and back for 20 minutes and then remove foil and bake for another 10-15 minutes.
I hope you enjoy the above recipe. Until tomorrow......

Quarantined - Day 1
So today is my first day of quarantine. No, I have not been tested nor am I sick, but our apartment complex has several cases of Covid-19 so the administrator decided with the number of elderly in the building it was very important to protect everyone by ordering a lock down. Many of us in New York State have been out of work and trying to stay in as much as possible, but at least you could go for a walk or to a store if you really needed to. That has all changed now.
This blog will be about my experience of living in a small apartment during quarantine. I will share what I do through out a day and what I found to be challenging for I know there will be days where I will want to scream, "get me out of here!"
This might afford me the time to find a way to upload pictures to this computer, as well as to continue my journey to better health. I will share some recipes using my groceries that I have in house which I hope will last the next two weeks. Some might not quite go with my dietary guidelines but the doctor and I have shared with her some of my choices so there would be no surprises. Happily I can say I have managed to lose in the last two weeks three pounds after being stuck at home and I have been trying very hard not to eat in the late evening which is the hardest time of the day for me.
Just a brief run down of my day after getting up and getting ready for the day. After breakfast I was able to tie in to our congregation meeting. We have a way to either tie in by phone or by Zoom. What a wonderful provision so we can be spiritually fed.
After lunch I decided to sit down with my colored pencils and continued coloring in my adult coloring book. It is called, Botanical Wonders Color Art for everyone. Many are filled with small spaces to fill and sometimes my eyes have a hard time focusing because of how busy the page can look. The final look though finished is well worth it and it helped to fill in some of the time stuck inside.
I then called a few friends to check up on them and some called me as well so part of the day was chatting on the phone. Mid afternoon I needed to get some exercising in so I went through my DVD collection and chose one to do. I then spent time watching some movies and had some internet time looking at some of the updated information on our area. (There are 36 who have tested positive in our county, Precautionary quarantine: 77, Mandatory quarantine 218, Active Hospitalizations: 5, Deaths 0, Total tests: 168.)
I do hope we can avoid having it bad here. All we can do is pray for everyone.
I hope you will follow me on this unique journey and may we all stay healthy during this time. Until tomorrow.......

Safety First
One more case has been reported in my apartment complex and over the past two weeks we have had several notices to stay in our apartments as much as possible, not to be in the common areas, no visiting in the halls, etc. Some of us are complying and sadly others are not. Those that are not taking this whole thing seriously are putting the rest of us in danger.
After I got the notice tucked in my door I right away started to wipe things down again and spray my air with Lysol. I try to open my windows daily just to bring in fresh air. I pray everyday that I will stay well and I hope my family and friends stay well too.
Please stay inside, not only for yourself but also for your families and neighbors. We have been advised to wear masks if we have them if we must leave our apartments. I will slip on a pair of disposable gloves as well just for added protection from anything that I touch.
I will post more later. Until then.......

Staying Safe During COVID 19
Here many of us sit in our homes wondering what the future will bring. Many are out of work like myself, but at least I have enough funds to pull through where many others do not. So how do we cope being cooped up in our homes?
I found that making a to do list is very helpful in finding things to do. I have taken care of some household chores that usually go on the wayside. One is going through papers and getting them shredded. What a good feeling I had getting rid of a lot of paper that had accumulated over a year. Having to be wiping things down several times a day also affords keeping the kitchen and bathroom in tip top shape. Even the living room is in really good order.
To stay mentally balanced I do indoor exercising. I take a few minutes in the morning and then later in the afternoon or early evening. I would love to go for a walk but with there being more positive cases for the COVID 19 it is better to stay in as much as possible. DVD's can also be a nice alternative to exercise too. I have several that I enjoy. I can't do exercises that require any jumping because I live over someone but a few are very good and I work up quite a sweat.
Those of us that have asthma, diabetes, have autoimmune diseases and those who smoke, are in a higher risk category. Add on being 60 and over things are even more stacked against us. My doctors recommended that I keep eating healthy, drinking lots of water to keep flushing my system, take Zinc, vitamin D3, multivitamin, and vitamin C. This I hope will help if I should fall ill.
Another thing I have been enjoying is coloring. I have a couple of adult coloring books and a good set of colored pencils. This helps to spend time doing something where I don't need to think about what is going on outside. I find this helps me also in controlling my appetite as I do have a tendency to want to nibble when I am bored and I am trying to loose weight. One thing I don't want to do is gain more while being at home.
Keeping a journal during this time in also very important in a historical way. Recording how the pandemic is spreading in my area, my experiences in staying at home, and if I should fall ill how did I manage. Another would be how did our own local officials do in assisting those in their communities. These are things that should be recorded. Historian's will want this information later.
Since I am home and now have internet I will be posting often during this time. Please stay positive during this difficult time.
